Obtaining the source code
The MESSy source code is available under the
GNU General Public License (GPL)
at no charge.
Since the GPL was not written with scientific programs in mind,
the source-code is not directly accessible from the web.
If you would like to use or to contribute to MESSy, please send a
letter of intent to

- If you plan to apply for external funding
and your proposal involves the
application and/or further development of MESSy, you are requested to
to avoid conflicts of interest.
- The MESSy submodels are categorised individually, depending on their
development and publication status (see list of submodels:
information can be found here:
MESSy-submodel license information).
- When you plan to publish results based on MESSy in a
scientific journal, the
Commons Attribution-NonCommerical-ShareAlike Licence also applies.
In particular, we ask you to follow these points:
- You are requested to consult us

co-authorships, during the early drafting phase of your
manuscript (publication or proposal). Please recall that all
submodel maintainers should be contacted individually about
the use of the code, recent bug-fixes and other changes, and

We will only request co-authorship for model developers where it
is really appropriate.
- We request that colleagues using ECHAM5/MESSy or stand-alone
components of MESSy in planned publications or proposals send a
preprint of their draft manuscript at least two weeks prior to
give us some time to check and prevent misinterpretation of model
results and conflicts of interest. Normally we put drafts on our
internal, password protected server. If you object to this procedure,
we will instead distribute the draft only to submodel maintainers

"The ECHAM/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry (EMAC) model is a
numerical chemistry and climate simulation system that
includes sub-models describing tropospheric and middle
atmosphere processes and their interaction with oceans,
land and human influences (Jöckel et al., 2006). It uses
the first version of the Modular Earth Submodel System
(MESSy1) to link multi-institutional computer codes. The
core atmospheric model is the 5th generation European
Centre Hamburg general circulation model (ECHAM5,
Roeckner et al., 2006).
For the present study we applied EMAC (ECHAM5 version 5.3.01,
MESSy version 1.9) in the T42L90MA-resolution,
i.e. with a spherical truncation of T42 (corresponding

latitude and longitude) with 90 vertical hybrid pressure levels
